Getting started

How to use Shimmr.
Nine small things.

Put on headphones, pick where you want to be, and let the sound do the rest. Here’s how to get the most out of it.

  1. 1

    Find a quiet, safe place.

Sit or lie somewhere you can relax. Never listen while driving or doing anything that needs your full attention.

  2. 2

    Put on headphones.

Binaural beats need a different tone in each ear, so any stereo headphones or earbuds work. On a speaker, choose isochronic sessions, noise or nature sounds instead.

  3. 3

    Keep the volume low.

The beat doesn’t need to be loud. Choose a level that feels gentle and easy to forget about.

  4. 4

Pick where you want to be.

Browse by intention, like sleep or focus, or start a Shift. A Shift moves you from where you are to where you want to be, for example Awake → Asleep.

  5. 5

    Set a length.

Use the timer in the player. The sound fades out at the end, so nothing pulls you back up.

  6. 6

    Make it yours.

Open the mixer from the player to set the levels of tones, ambience, noise and your own music, add reverb or EQ, and save the mix. In Sound Canvas you can drag sounds into a space around you.

  7. 7

    Play it alongside other apps.

In the mixer’s Preferences, turn on Play Audio with Other Apps to keep Shimmr playing under a podcast or music. It also keeps playing with the screen off.

  8. 8

    Keep track.

Connect Apple Health to save your mindful minutes, and see your streaks and heat map in your profile.

  9. 9

    Come back often.

A short session most days is easier to keep up than a long one now and then.
